Dengan mencontoh mesin fotokopi di perkantoran, para ilmuwan kemudian menciptakan printer atau mesin cetak yang bisa menghasilkan kopi gambar sel biologis berukuran nanoscale atau sangat kecil.
Ilmuwan dari Illinois University yang mengembangkan mesin fotokopi sel ini menyebutkan, hasil cetak sel biologis bisa sangat membantu dalam membuat jaringan tubuh buatan.
"Dengan memodifikasi teknik, akan sangat mungkin memanipulasi sel biologis atau sel biomolekul seperti DNA," kata ketua tim studi John Rogers seperti dikutip dari New Scientist.
Printer jet electrohydrodynamic buatan mereka bekerja dengan menghasilkan tegangan listrik berbeda diantara mulut pipa metalik dan subtrat di bawahnya. Hasil dari tegangan elektrik menyebabkan muatan ion dalam tinta berkumpul dalam mulut pipa dan permukaannya terbentuk seperti bulan sabit.
Karena muatan ion saling menolak, permukaan bulan sabit kemudian akan berubah bentuk menjadi bentuk kerucut, menghasilkan ujung super tipis dimana tetesan kecil tinta paling kecil dikeluarkan.
Proses ini menghasilkan ketidakseimbangan dalam kuantitas ion negatif dan positif dalam tinta cetak. Namun anggota tim menyadari bahwa dengan mengganti muatan kutub tegangan, mereka bisa menyelesaikan masalah tersebut serta bisa juga mencetak berbagai pola rumit muatan negatif atau positif ke dalam substrat. Pada intinya, kemampuan ini sangat dibutuhkan untuk membuat kopi sel biologis yang rumit dan sangat kecil.
